馬德里城約始建於西元九世紀，為摩爾人(Moor)於邊境貿易站馬格利特(Magerit)舊址上所發展而成的城市，而「馬格利特」原意即「水豐之地」。
十五世紀前，馬德里由阿拉伯人統治，十五世紀時才被天主教勢力所收復，1561年，國王菲利浦二世(Felipe II, 1527-1598)將首府由華拉都列(Valladolid)遷入於此，此後馬德里便迅速發展逐漸成為西班牙帝國之中心。
現今的馬德里則擁有新舊兼陳之多樣風貌，既是政經與文化中心，也是觀光重鎮。馬德里的市街多以石磚鋪設，不時可見優雅的古建築巍然矗立，充滿濃郁之古都風韻，而現代化大樓林立的大馬路、公園與人聲頂沸的商場，則是新城市之面貌。

馬德里市約略可分為三區，舊市街的狹小道路仍可見舊時代風情，漫步其中別有一番景緻，其中心為「太陽門廣場(Puerta del Sol)」，也是市民主要的休憩聚會地點，此外，由市長大道至市長廣場一帶則有許多小吃店與餐館，可供觀光客恣意品嚐在地美食。馬德里也是購物天堂，各式商店可滿足不同人的需求，而讓人大開眼界的是掛滿各種火腿的火腿商店，排放得整齊乾淨，不僅讓人食指大動，想進去試吃，也使得火腿們彷彿成為一個個賞心悅目的藝術品，大大降低了視覺上的恐懼感。
對曾學過佛朗明哥舞、熱愛佛朗明哥舞的我而言，來到西班牙一定得逛佛朗明哥舞衣專賣店，而我也在太陽門附近終於找到了一家規模不小的舞衣專賣店「Maty」 ，店內陳列了各種芭蕾舞衣與佛朗明哥舞衣與飾品配件，讓人眼花瞭亂、愛不釋手，但單價卻不便宜，由於在西班牙，佛朗明哥舞衣專賣店其實不如想像中好找，因此也讓我荷包大失血。
